U3A is a UK wide organisation made up of independent u3a groups run by their members. Members are normally retired or semi-retired and wish to use some of their leisure time to share knowledge and skills, to acquire new ones and to meet like-minded people and to socialise. There are over a 1,000 u3a’s in Britain with a collective membership of over 400,000. All u3a are affiliated to the national body – TAT (The Third Age Trust) which looks after them providing educational and administrative support and represents them at a national and international level.
Kenilworth u3a was founded in 2007 and goes from strength to strength with a current membership of 700+ and rising. It provides the opportunity to learn informally in a friendly environment from fellow members. If you believe that learning is for pleasure and want to develop your knowledge or skill in a subject, engage in creative activities or socialise with like-minded people, or just enjoy a good walk with new friends, then u3a is for you.
The only entry qualification is that you must not be working full time.
The name “U3a” is an acronym for “University of the Third Age” but the word “University” is somewhat misleading and is not meant to imply anything academic, or for ex-university people with qualification etc. but reflects that we are all still learning throughout our lives, which of course we are. The third age is an age when one starts the new career of retirement.
Kenilworth u3a is a registered charity, no. 1184403, and like all u3a’s is a non-religious, non-political organisation. We are a totally voluntary organisation run by a Committee which currently consists of eight members. The role of chairman, secretary and Treasurer are the officers of the committee, and with the other members, are trustees of the charity. Committee members are re-elected every year at the Annual general meeting, although more can be co-opted at any time of the year.
